"Baseball - In Ninth Hour Clubs in Texas Colored League are Getting ...Together... Strong Clubs to Represent the Organization. Dallas Opens April 30th With Wao. - Famous Austin Reds Fires First Gun of Nineteen With Samuel Houston College, Scores 2 to 1 - By J. Alba Austin. - The Texas League season will open in Dallas, Sunday, April 20th with Waco Black Navigators. The Dallas Black Giants will in the initial game give an account of their few weeks of careful training for a tough season. The Navigators will this season present fans of Texas with practically a new club with exception of a few veterans whose faces are familiar to fandom and with this installation of new blood in their lineup it is rumored Waco, should be quite a formidable outfit for the coming season. The lineup is as follows: Catchers, Henderson, Samuels; pitchers, Hicks and Steel Arm Davis; first base Jackson; second base, Jones; short stop Washginton, third base Blackmon; left field, Wade; centerfield, Golden; right field Smith and Henry Fluis, captain. John Richardson alias Black Son looks as fine as a fiddle this season and predicts he will have the best season of his career. Son says all is well and the sound of the gong will be sweet music to his ears. Harry Scott, the fleet-footed outer garden guardian is booked to make rome howl this season, the Galveston kid is shooting 'em around with rapid fire action and looks good to the casual observer. Will Jones, a star infielder of many seasons is raring to go as Bill is a goer of the first water. Eddie Douglas is here yet, and a Giant Uniform would be very becoming to him. The Giants presents the following line-up for the season: Catchers, Riley, Black Son, Spearmon; pitchers, Dave Brown, Cornelius Rector, Andrew Cooper, Hudson and Tom Arnold; infielders, Will Jones, Dave Johnson, Lynn Mallory, Charles Elder and Naman Washington; outfielders, Robert Scott, Bobby Sloan and Bernie Collins. Reserve list: Nathan Green, Glen Brown, Charles Calico, Louis Spencer and Robert McCleary."

"Baseball Managers - Notice - The Great Dallas Express wishes to announce that it will, beginning with this issue, print all matters pertaining to organize baseball, such as standing and results of games played by various teams. It further believes that thousands of its readers in Texas, Oklahoma, and other states are entitled to information concerning baseball among colored people and to this end shall urge upon each baseball manager to send in write-ups of his club and the number of games won and batteries of each contesting club to the sporting editor."

"Austin Black Senators Coming. Boys Beware. Something Going to Happen. - Saturday and Sunday, May 3 and 4 flushes an open hand to fandom to which the most skeptical observer will agree, take it from us in the coming of the Austin Black Senators its dollars to doughnuts that the Giants will have an arm-full. The Senators present themselves to local fans as the unbeaten challengers of the old season's rag and will move as unit invade the territorial haunts of the Dallas Black Giants as chesty as an English Lord. The Austin Club presents a formidable outfit this season, being made up of old and new stars of the game. Laury Jones, formerly of the Dallas Black Giants and one of the hardest hitters in the business. Black Tank Stewart, well known for his pitching and slugging with San Antonio Bronchos, Buck Alexander, one of the pitching best in the business. Dick Walker, veteran short stop, who stages a comeback. Lawson Perry, a new one, and a comer and others making up the retinue of a well balanced combination."

"Giants Showing Signs of Old Time Pep. - The old pep characterizing the fighting spirit of the Giants of old has not failed from view this was shown fully in the first scrap with the Navs. However, the pitching staff is made up principally of youngsters who are having their first trial in fast company some having made a very good impression. Bell acquitted himself very gracefully in his first tilt and looks if though he can pull the grade. Bell is a left hander and is destined to do great work with little more seasoning. Johnny Wright is a new one a right hander, who possesses a good assortment of curves and control and is very cool under fire, hasn't had a chance to show in a regular game. Fred Daniels is the only ace of the old brigade left and has not been started this season. Fred is a speed merchant and has a chance to come into his own this season. The infield of the Giants is all that is expected. Will Jones on first, Black Son on second, Davie Johnson on short and Spearmon at third. Riley doing the bulk of the catching. The outfield present two of the biggest attractions in Texas in Sloan and Scott, center field hole is being chinked with an infielder, Felder, who is doing fairly good under the circumstances. Hitting strength is what we want under another good oufielder would fill the bill."

"South Texas Clubs. - To the managers of Houston, Galveston, San Antonio, Beaumont, Shreveport, send us your line-ups and the results of your games. Keep your team before fans of Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana."

"Sparks of the Diamond. - Eddie Douglass, former first baseman of the Dallas Black Giants has a regular berth with the Brooklyn Royal Giants. Edgar Wesley, former star of the Waco Navigators is now holding down first base job for Detroit and is getting his daily bingles. The famous Texas battery, Brown and Brown are now the property of the American Giants and made their debut before a Chicago gathering recently and walked off with the bacon. The same old pep that put the Texas sluggers on water wagon was shouldered the boys of the big show. They have made good. Waco has a comer in this boy Davis, who flings from the heart side. With careful training into one of the Giant's greatest stars. Blackmon of Waco hasn't struck his stride yet as everyone knows that Blackmon is one of the best fielding artists in the loop around the hot corner and is equally as dangerous with the stick."

"Drop Two in a Row - Rector White Wash Senators in Initial Bow. Big Right Hander Invicible While Teammates Wield Wicked Willow. - By J. Alba Austin. - Patterson's band of Senators lead an attack Saturday and Sunday against Lee Jones's tribe of Giants with disastrous results. In Saturday's battle Tank Stuart, veteran of many games marshaled the evening forces. Fred Daniels receiving call of the local squad early in the game it was observed that the Senators were outclassed in pitching, hitting and fielding. With Sloan, Spearmon, Will Jones, Richardson and Johnson vicious assaults with the war club, Stuart's defense crumbled and he was relieved by DeWitt. Having given in the four innings he pitched 10 hits netting a total of 7 runs. His predecessor fared a trifle better."

"Sunday pasturing presented a front of a real ball game. Alexander, star twirler of the Black Senators and Rector, the Giants new hurler, were nominated for mound dity and each being accorded brilliant support. Rector holding the opposition to six hits and no runs. Dallas scoring in the 1st, 2nd and 6th innings. First round, one for Austin, Laurie gets free trip on four wide ones, steals second. Perry out bunting third strike, Stuart lined to Richardson, Colloway grounded Richardson to Jones for final out-no-runs. Dallas - Sloan walks, Richardson triples Sloan scoring, Washington pulled Calloway for a life and steals 2nd, Johnson flies to Walker and Richardson score on relay to Carrington, Elder whiffs, Kinyon out Perry to Calloway, Washington dying at 3rd. One hit a sacrifice fly and two runs. First half of second inning Austin - Walker popped to Jones, McClure grounded, Johnson to Jones Carrington singled to left and was caught trying to stretch it into a double. One hit, no runs. Giants comes back in last half of second and squeeze in another maker: W. Jones survives on Calloway's error in dropping the throw to catch him, Mackey lined to Alexander and lived on Alex's attempt to nab Jones at second. Rector out bunting on third strike, Sloan fouls to Carrington, Richardson beat out a slow one and loading the bases, Washington singles scoring Jones and Johnson flies to L. Jones side retire, 2 hits and 1 run. Alexander settles down and holds Giants runless for three rounds, releasing themselves from Alexander clutches the giants starts another rally. Kinyon singles between second and third, Bill Jones sacrifices Kinyon going to 2nd, Mackey singles to right and Rector with a wicked smash pasted the bean for a double to deep left, scoring Kinyon and Mackey, Sloan lined to Perry, Richardson grounded for final out L. Jones to Calloway, Three hits and 2 runs. - Senators Threatening in Eight. - Austin looked dangerous in eight and threatened to score. Carrington out Mackey to Jones, Owens hit safely over second. Alexander attempted to win his own game doubled to left. Owens dashed for home, but was caught with a quick relay by Kinyon to Mackey. L. Jones fouled to Mackey and broke up what destined to have been a batting ralley or a garrison finish. Rector was never again in danger cheerfully going the full route and pitched on to a glorious finish to delight of fandom in his initial bow."

"Beaumont vs Dallas. - Beaumont Oilers are the next bunch of warriors to invade the local battle grounds. First battle to be launched is Sunday, May 11th and concluding Monday, May 12th. The Oilers are a seasoned bunch and will give an accurate account of themselves while here. The Oilers were the strongest combination of the season last year until their outfit was riddled by draft boards and badly crippled during their engagement here and made the best of it under combinations. However they were crippled and game to the core, but plenty of ginger and pep were observant in the old shattered machine. This year hundreds of boys have returned and the Oilers' machine has been repolished and rejuvinated and should make the Giants hustle."

"Giants Won By Hitting the Ball. - Black Oilers Lose First Game in North Texas - Ross Pitching in Great Form, Weakens in Fifth - Rector Stars with the Pole. - Jupiter Pluvius dealt a trumpless hand to Dallas baseball fans Sunday by sending a heavy downpour of rain. To the casual observer the rain soaked diamond at Gardner Park had an appearance of an ideal spot for fishing and yacht racing. However, appetites of local bugs were keenly sharpened and primed for the affair, hundreds having stored in their old beans the outcome of the mix-up which was primed and cocked for a bitter argument. Rain preventing Sunday's game the two gladiators hooked up Monday in a very nifty article of the Nation's pastiming and apparently for four innings the old game was destined to be a pitching duel between Ross and Bell, each being backed up by brilliant support. Rector playing left field for Dallas was the particular bright star of the evening, getting a single and two doubles out of three trips to the plate and equally as many runs to his credit. The visitors drew first blood in round one. Curtis drew a walk and was forced at second by Bailey, Williams tripled to left center and scoring Bailey for the first run. Brockett grounded to Richarson and Williams was caught at the plate by Richardson's quick relay and Johnson hugged Story's dinky infield pop-up for the final out. Dallas made a futile effort in evening up matters in the last half of first inning. Sloan grounded to Ross, Richardson singled over second and goes to second on Story's bobble of Johnson's grounder. Richardson was nabbed at second by Bailey and Kenyon grounded to Ross for final out. It was a pitchers' battle at this point on and was a case of three up and three down, hits being as scarce as hen teeth until the last half of the fifth, when Dallas overcame a one-run lead. Round five; Rector first up smashes the apple for two cushions, Andrews flies to Boykins, Bell hit to Williams, who threw to Story to catch Bell, who was dashing for third; Story tagged Bell, according to the Beaumont bunch and a few others, but Umpire Taylor's decision was that the runner was safe for the fielder failing to tag runner. The decision met serious opposition by the visitors, Catcher unter walking off the field, after much wrangling play was resumed and Bell was awarded the bag. Bell on first and nobody out; Ross gives Sloan a free trip to catch Richardson and choking the bases; Richardson up, doubles to right, scoring Rector and Bell. Richardson was thrown out at second by Ross and Johnson fanned the breeze at three thus ending a fatal round for Beaumont. The homelings ease another marker in the last of sixth. Elder got a life on Story's error, Rector uncorked a Texas Leaguer over second and Andrews got a life on another hobble by Story, Bell forced Elder at home plate, bases are loaded and Sloan singles to center scoring Bell. Richardson grounded to Bailey, Johnson out to Williams. Again the Giants with a more vicious assault bombard Ross' offerings and taking advantage of the poor support in the latter stage of the game, Dallas' lucky seventh; Kenyon slaps a corking liner for which Lofton grabs and misses a mile, thus Kenyon getting credit for a two-ply swat, Spearmon hit one too hard for Bailey to handle, the ball bounded far above his head and when the ball was recovered Kenyon had scored and Spearmon was resting comfortably at first, getting second on Hunter's muff, Elder walks, Roctor poles another double scoring Spearmon and Elder, Andrews hit a high fly to Snow Ball who relieved Lofton in left and Snow Ball muffed, Rector scoring on the error. Bell flies to Williams, Sloan out Ross to Curtis, Richardson flies to Boykin for final out. The Oilers scored again in the eighth thus ending the scoring; Lofton singled to right, Ross cracked a safe blow through short, Lofton going to second, Curtis lives on Johnson's error, filling the baks, Bailey hit to Johnson, forcing Ross at third and doubled Curtis at second, Lofton scoring, Williams flied to Andrews for the final out."

"Bob Bailey showed flashes of his old time pep occasionally in Monday's game. Every one knows that Bailey is a smart little fielder and is always dangerous with the stick on the paths or in the field. To our regret Bill Jones has gone to Shreveport and will cast his lot with the Smart Set. Too bad. Robert Scott, better known as 'Bow Legs,' is now cavorting in the outfield for St. Louis Giants and won a home run with St. Louis fans with a home run with the bases chugged and turning defeat into victory. The Giants have signed a new catcher, a fast collegian, Prof. Battles by name and a school teacher, who expects to report at the end of his school term. He hails from Arkansas. New Orleans Red Sox will enter the local haunts next month for a series with the Goliaths."

"How is this bird Rector, boys. Don't all speak at once; can't he smack the old pill. Out of three trips to the plate three runs and three hits, one single and two doubles; good day's work, eh! Richardson's lamps are gradually getting in trim, the old veteran possesses the punch when a knockout blow is needed. Brockman made a sweet stab of Sloan's long fly to right last half of the third with a running catch."

"Diamond Chips. - Dallas Black giants left Friday night to invade the haunts of the southern Metropolis. They open May 25 with Houston, three games will be played here and then a journey over to the Oil City where the Black Oilers awaits with a scorching reception. Bob Bailey played his usual game at second. Story's francs. Jim hasn't lost any of his cunning. This bird Boykins put up a very peppery brand of baseball behind the willow, Sunday. Dave Johnson, brain of the Giants' infield had faith in winning until the last man was out in the 9th. The official scorer was ill Sunday thus a box score of the game was obtainable, however the Giants got a licking."

"Baseball - Broncs Win One and Drop One. - San Antonio Broncos lived up to predictions made by the Dallas Express Sports Writer in Sunday's game by trouncing the Giants 7 to 4. The ponies waded into Rector's offerings early in the game and banged out enough for the win. Davis held the locals safe in the punches by keeping their hits well scattered. Six big fat large and juicy errors loomed up behind Rector's flinging which aided materially in his downfall."

"Fort Worth Wonders Here Sunday and Monday. - Sunday and Monday, June 15 and 16 will present to local fans their first look over at the Ham Branch celebrities who report on above mentioned days for a pair of conflicts with Jones's Black Giants. The Cow town boys have always served the Giants regime with a dish of tough steaks until their appetite for cow meat have been wholly exterminated. Fort Worth has always been a dangerous bunch, but the Giants could always take 'em to toy. Come and see 'em."
