"Lincoln Giants to Play Cuba's Best Saturday - Followers of semi-professional baseball hereabouts are awaiting the big clash between Rod McMahon's fast Lincoln Giants and the crack Cuban Stars, which will be staged Saturday afternoon in American League Park, the home of the Highlanders. This contest will be the first of a series of five games between these teams. The Lincoln Giants claim the semi-pro championship of the United States, while the Cuban Stars are the champions of Cuba, having beaten all the crack teams in that country. The Lincolns have won sixty out of sixty-eight games so far this season, and the Cubans on their tour here have beaten many of the best teams."

"Cuban Stars Pound Em Out - Lincoln Giants Beaten on Hilltop Grounds, but Register Triple Play. - The Cuban Stars, a semi-professional aggregation, which has made a successful tour of the United States, defeated the Lincoln Giants, a local negro nine, at American League Park, yesterday in the first game of a series. The score was 14 to 8. The Cubans batted heavily and were fleet on the bases. The Lincoln Giants also did some lusty batting, but they supported their twirlers raggedly. They pulled off a clever and fast triple play, however, in the initial inning, with the bases filled. Mendez, the clever Cuban twirler, who has led his team in forty-two contests with only one defeat, in its continental tour, again mounted the mound. Although pounded safely fourteen times, twelve of the hits coming in the first five innings, he struck out eight men and issued only four passes. Redding, who was banked upon to carry the Lincoln Giants to victory, had to retire in the third inning, when he was viciously maltreated by his rivals to the tune of six hits and seven runs. McClellan then took up the task and went along smoothly, with the exception of the eighth inning. An enthusiastic Saturday half holiday crowd of more than seven thousand persons was in attendance. Open betting with a group of bookmakers as its centre prevailed throughout the stand, with the Cuban Stars the choice, at the odds of 8 to 5. It is estimated that several thousand dollars were wagered on the result. It was announced that Rube Foster's American Giants, from Chicago, who have quite a reputation in the West, would play the winners in a second contest of the series on the Hilltop grounds next Saturday afternoon. Redding began the game inauspiciously. Hernandez was passed and sped to third on Moran's clean single over second. On Gonzales's tap to Redding, the latter hesitated a few seconds and then threw wildly, allowing Hernandez to score. Catillo was also passed, which filled the sacks. Then came the timely triple play, which abruptly cut off the batting rally, but Hidalgo hit sharply to Redding, who threw to Santop, cutting off Moran. The former then threw to Booker, at first, who quickly relayed the ball to third, catching both Hidalgo and Gonzales, the latter on a close play at the far bag."

"Triple Play on Hill Top. - Lincoln Giants Make it but Cuban Stars Win. - Before 8,000 baseball fans yesterday afternoon at American League Park the Cuban Stars defeated the Lincoln Giants in the first game of a series to decide the semi-professional championship of New York county. It was the first appearance of the Cubans in this city and they won easily by the score of 14 to 8. In the opening inning the Cuban Stars made their first run. Hernandez took first on balls and went to third on Moran's single. On Gonzales's tap to Redding the latter threw wildly, allowing Hernandez to score. AFter the run had been scored the Cubans filled the bases, whereupon the locals pulled off a triple play. Hidalgo hit to Redding, who threw to Santoff, cutting off Moran at the plate. Santoff threw to Booker at first, catching Hidalgo before he could reach the bag. Then, like a flash, Booker relayed the ball to third, nailing Gonzalez."
