"St. Patrick - Pennsylvania Red Cap Battle - Handsome Bill Egan's Colored Baseball Stars Invade Washburn Park Sunday. - Admirers of the St. Patricks will be entertained with comedy in addition to first class baseball at Washburn Park Sunday afternoon, when the Pennsylvania Red Caps, clever colored ball players, will oppose the "Saints." Though organized in 1916, the Red Caps are the sensation of the independent maroon baseball world, being the most formidable rivals of the Lincoln and Royal Giants and Cuban Stars, the Big Three of the colored semi-pro class. The Red Caps were named for their manager, and organizer, "Handsome Bill" Egan, stationmaster of the Thirty-Third Street Terminal. Bill is a thirty-third degree fan and is justly proud of the enviable record of the Red Caps. Egan will wager his bankroll on them in a series with the Royals or Lincolns for the championship of the colored baseball clubs, but the managers of the R. and L. squads are as mum as oysters when the Bills are mentioned. Jersey City Players. The Pennyslvania Red Caps include Pierce, Dunbar, Forbes, Bailey and Langford, former Lincoln Giants, and Culver, the clever Jersey City athlete. Langford is classed with the best pitchers in the country. He was the twirling star of the 1915 Lincolns. Langford assisted Manager Egan in organizing the Red Caps. As captain of the team he has been one of the most successful pilots in the East. Pierce, who was Langford's battery mate, is with the Red Caps. This clever team will be in action against the St. Patricks on Sunday. The outfield of the Red Caps - Culver, a local boy, at center; Dunbar in left and Edwards in right, and in the infield, Bailey at third, Forbes at short and the Parks brothers at first and second, compare favorably with the fielders of any semi-pro club in the U.S.A. The Pennsylvania Red Caps this season defeated the Bushwicks, Kingsbridge AThletics, Bronx Athletics, Farmer of Long Island, Empire city, Springfields, Ironsides, Bacharach Giants of Atlantic City and the Camden, New Jersey team. Twomey at Second. Archie Miller will depend upon Wilson or McKenzie, to trounce the colored champs, with Jack Clougher doing the catching. Charley Twomey, the "Saints" new star, will look after second, and if he plays up to the form he showed last Sunday the one weak spot in the Millerites' defense will be eliminated. Charley Rade, Tom McAuliffe, Johnny Kull, Joe Brennan and Harry and Charley Rothfuss will be in their usual positions. Baseball fans are booked for an enjoyable afternoon at Washburn Park. The Red Caps will entertain early arrivals with an exhibition of "comedy baseball" before the game, and 18-karat fans should make an early start for the grounds if they want to see the fun. The games at Washburn Park the remainder of the season will start at 3:15 instead of 3:30.
