"Faculty Nine Will Not Play Cubans Here - Faculty Restriction Prevents College Nine - Royal Giants Substituted - Because of a faculty restriction, the Poughkeepsie Cubans will not play the Manhattan College team at Riverview on Saturday afternoon as scheduled. Dr. Henriquez received word that the faculty had passed a rule that the team could play no teams but college teams. However, the local fans will have an opportunity of seeing a good game here Saturday as Dr. Henriquez has made arrangements whereby the Royal Giants will play here. - Royals Champions of the West. - In the Royal Giants the Cubans are meeting one of the strongest colored teams in the country today. The team last year was known as the St. Louis Giants and under that name cleaned up the West, winning the semi-pro championship of the West by taking three out of five games in a series with the A.B.C. team of Indianapolis. With the colored team here Saturday will be Gatewood, considered the best colored pitcher in the game today. The Royals met the strong Lincoln Giants on Sunday last and were returned winners and all indications are that the locals will have to go at top speed to win. The game will be called at 3:45 o'clock sharp. Manhattan Game off. - The following letter will explain the cancellation of the Poughkeepsie Cubans-Manhattan College game: Manhattan College Athletic Association. - New York, New York, May 29, 1916. Department Baseball. Dr. Carlos L. Henriquez, Dear Sir: - We shall be unable to meet your team at Poughkeepsie on Saturday, June 3. A faculty regulation (recent) preevents us from taking any but college teams on our schedule. Your very sincerely, Brother Matthew. - At Riverview Field Saturday afternoon the Poughkeepsie Cubans will meet the Royal Giants. The Manhattan College team was scheduled here, but the college faculty barred the team from playing and Dr. Henriquez scheduled the colored team. The Royals are one of the strongest colored teams in the game today. Last year as the St. Louis Giants they cleaned up the west. Gatewood, their star hurler, will be on the mound against the Cubans."

This team which made its first start Sunday two weeks ago, against Jesse McMahon's Lincoln Stars, will give their adversaries in the future undeniable hot contests."

New York, NY
"Captain Pettus, of the Lincoln Stars, has certainly performed wonders with the team at Lenox Oval. Starting off with hardly any team at all, the Lincoln Stars at the present moment looks like the best team in the East.

"Royal Giants Here for Series - The first contest in the series of six games to be played between the Poughkeepsie Cubans and the Royal Giants will be contested this afternoon at Riverview Field at 3:30 o'clock. This series will go a long way toward eliminating one of the teams in the race for the Eastern semi-pro championship, in which five teams figure. The locals have practically eliminated the Lincoln Stars and hope to rout the Royals. In the opening tilt Lefty Harvey the sensational southpaw of the visitors, will be the hurler and it is thought that the locals will send Mudoz, the star of the Henriquez stable, to the firing line."

"Royal Giants and Cubans in 4-Game Series - Rain stopped the Poughkeepsie Cubans - Royal Gaints at Riverview Field yesterday afternoon, but provided Mr. Weatherman permits, the same teams will battle today, tomorrow, Thursday and Friday. The Royals come here fresh from victories over the Lincoln Giants and are confident of taking the measure of the locals. Yesterday's downpour helped the visitors, as they will be able to send Stringbean Williams, their star hurler, to the mound. Williams is an elongated moundsman and is considered the best colored pitcher in the game today. Sunday last he was pitted against Cyclone Joe Williams, the star of the Lincoln Giants, and much to the surprise of the dopesters the elongated one was returned the winner. Dr. Henriquez will depend on Mudoz to pitch the locals to victory. He has not worked since Thursday last and should be in great form. All games will be called at Riverview Field at 3:30 o'clock."

"Cuban Win Slow Contest From Royals - Locals Make 12 Hits for Total of 16 Bases - Win by Score of 9-4. - Calvo and Hungo Star with Willow. - In a contest that was marked by free hitting, the Cubans triumphed over the Royal Giants of Brooklyn at Riverview Field yesterday afternoon by a score of 9-4. The score is no indication of how badly the visitors were beaten. The locals slammed out twelve hits for a total of sixteen bases and had they tried they might have had twenty tallies. Mudoz started the contest for the locals, but after getitng a eight-run lead retired in favor of Barranda. Stringbean Williams, the star hurler of the colored aggregation, started on the hill, but after pitching five balls and passing Romonach, he retired. The pitching burdens were taken up by Red Smith, late of the Lincoln Stars. His offerings were hit to all corners in this frame and the locals scored five times before a man was retired. In the fourth the locals started again and in this frame several hits, sprinkled with a couple of boots, gave the locals three more runs. Mudoz retired from the contest in the fifth after allowing the Royals four hits. Barranda took up the firing line duties and was touched up for six hits in four innings. It was only due to good support on the part of his team mates that the score was kept down. Calvo and Hungo starred at the bat for the locals. The former scored two doubles and a single in five times at bat, while the latter made a double and two singles in as many trips to the plate. Handy and Despret played well for the visitors. The same teams will play again this afternoon, tomorrow and Friday. The game tomorrow afternoon will be called at 4:15 o'clock."

"Royals and Cubans Clash - This afternoon at 4:15 o'clock at Riverview Field, the Poughkeepsie Cubans and the Royal Giants of Brooklyn, will come together in the second game of the series. The teams were to have played yesterday, but shortly before game time rain set in and festivities were called off. The game this afternoon will see Stringbean Williams, the star hurler of the visitors, and Ballesteros, the opposing pitchers. Williams started the Tuesday game against the locals, but after throwing five balls retired. He claims his arm is in shape for today's contest and with the elongated one in shape the locals will have to go at top speed all the way."

"Padron's Hit Gives Cubans 6-5 Victory - Louis' Drive Clears Left Field Fence and Scores Gonzales Ahead of Him. - One of the longest hits ever made on Riverview Field ended the third and final game of the series between the Poughkeepsie Cubans and the Royal Giants of Brooklyn. With the score 5-4 in favor of the visitors in the final frame, Gonzales, batting for Johnson, walked. Calvo sent him on his way to second. Louis Padron, the local favorite, stopeed to the bat and with the count 2 and 2 hit the next ball pitched on a line over the left field fence far above the home run amrk. The final score was 6-5. Besides hitting in the winning tally, Padron held up his end of the mound. Louis was sent to the mound and aside from the third inning was never in trouble. He had his spit ball working and held the Royals to nine hits, which were scattered. Opposed to Padron was Stringbean Smith. The visiting hurler pitched a good game, but his free gifts proved his undoing. During the contest he passed seven to first base. - Royals Take Lead in Third. The contest started off like an honest-to-goodness contest. For two innings neither team was able to score.
