"Vigilants Battle Quaker City Club - Famous Philadelphia Giants Booked to Meet Local Independent Champions Sunday and Monday. - Manager Oliveri, of the Vigilants, has succeeeded in securing, after a great deal of wrangling, the famous Philadelphia giants, one of the strongest traveling teams in the country, and which is booked direct from New York by the well-known booking agency of Nat C. Strong. The Giants are well known throughout this country as having played many of the big league teams and always giving a good account of themselves. They are this week playing a series of games with the Royal Giants, Lincoln Giants, and Cuban Giants at Atlantic City, and are playing to tremendous crowds. This should be a big attraction for the fans of this city, and no doubt was only booked after considerable expense. This team will play a double-header each day, Sunday, August 31, and Monday, September 1 (Labor Day), the first game being with the Washington Giants and the second game with our strong local champions, the Vigilants, at Vigilant Park, fifteenth and H Streets Northeast. Manager Oliveri, anticipating a large crowd, has prepared ropes for the field. The first game will start promptly at 1:30 o'clo ck, with Joe Handiboe and Billy Betts handling the indicator on Sunday and Mr. Betts working with another local umpire on Monday."
