"Keene Baseball Men Can't Come to Bennington - Directors Won't Permit Team to Play on Sunday - Lost Game to Colored Men - Philadelphia Royal Giants Beat Bennington 7 to 3 - Play Again This Afternoon - The Philadelphia Royal Giants played ball at Morgan park yesterday afternoon and played so much better ball than the local team that they won the game by a score of 7 to 3. Bennington had an off day yesterday. At the same time the Huckleberry boys found themselves pitted against the snappiest bunch of ball players during the present summer. The colored players were not such large men as made up the Brooklyn Royal Giants who appeared here some weeks ago but they were far more active. The work of the infield players, especially, was something of a revelation to the crowd. The duskey ball tossers handled the sphere in a highly finished manner and showed every evidence of long and constant practice. In the opinion of some of the fans, Miller, the little shortstop, gave the best exhibition in that position ever seen on a Bennington diamond. Some of his stops were on balls that looked to be impossible and his throwing was not only speedy but as accurate as rifle shooting. Burns pitched excellent ball for Bennington but his support was rocky. Finnegan, who has been playing good ball for Bennington all the season, went to the bad as soon as the game began and even Connors, the most reliable man on the team, broke into the error column. Both Connors and Finnegan, however, outclassed their team mates with the stick for they made the only clean hits for the home team during the game. Finnegan made two singles and Connors' three-sacker to left field was a pretty drive. The boys last evening all seemed to be a little upset over the poor showing, of the team and were all ready to promise a better exhibition for the game this afternoon. They are capable of playing far different ball and if the colored men will only repeat their creditable work the game this afternoon will be well worth the money. The crowd was small yesterday but it responded fairly well to the appeal to help out the treasury. The game this afternoon will be played on the benefit plan and it is hoped that everyone who can afford to do so will respond. The tickets this afternoon will be sold at the regular price, 25 cents, but if any individual should put up $25 for an admission the directors wouldn't object in the least."
